Australian Ambassador on Chinese Tourist Cities

Interview with Australian Ambassador Dr. Geoff Raby on Chinese Tourist Cities

Reporter:
As an old friend of Chinese people who first visited China in 1986, which Chinese city has made the deepest impression on you? What are the most popular Chinese cities for Australians?

Dr. Geoff Raby:
It’s a difficult question to answer. I like many Chinese cities. What I appreciate is the uniqueness of different Chinese cities. The ones I have been to, the most, would be Qingdao, Shanghai, Wuhan, Dalian and Harbin.
I have to say I like the cities on the coast because being an Australian;you tend to related more to cities where there is water. And Dalian has a very big harbor, it has quite dramatic sceneries with the hills on the background. It’s also a sophisticated city, some good historical buildings, a great mixture of things and some very fine restaurants so I must say as an Australian, I like to eat seafood very much and the sea food in Dalian is excellent.
Reporter:
Would you please introduce one Australian city worthy of visiting to Chinese people? What are the places of interest visitors can’t miss if they go to Australia?
Dr. Geoff Raby:
Melbourne is my hometown but Sydney is where my heart really is. I love Sydney, I love the water, the dramatic harbor, the natural bush land you can see around. It is a very sophisticated city again, outstanding restaurants, very close to some amazing beaches like Manly Beach or Bondi Beach. It’s a world within a city, and it’s wonderful experience.
Reporter:
The 10 most charming Chinese cities will be selected by global netizens at the end of this month. What are your hopes for this Chinese City Ranking event?
Dr. Geoff Raby:
It’s a great idea. I think the world needs to come to China and needs to become familiar with the many different cities China has, and the different lifestyle and characteristics and flavor of each city. Chinese city is very reach in their diversity and it’s a great travel experience to be able to experience them.
